Chokeberry – Fruit of the Future
The Chokeberry is an extremely healthy and useful fruit, native to eastern North America.
The Chokeberry is a deciduous shrub found most commonly in wet woods and swamps. It is also called the Siberian Berry because of its tolerance of cold temperatures, as low as minus 49 degrees F.
There are 2 well known species of the Chokeberry in eastern North America, the Red Chokeberry (Aronia Arbutifolia) and Black Chokeberry (Aronia Melanocarpa.) However, there is also a hybrid of the two called the Purple Chokeberry (Aronia prunifolia.)
Due to the high resistance of drought, pollution, diseases and insects they are often used in homes as decorative plants.
