The fig tree is one of the oldest cultivated plants. This tree represents peace and fertility. The earliest written reference came from King Urukagina, Sumerian King in 2,900 BC. In 1520, the Spanish spread the fig tree to the new continent, America. This tree is a popular tree in the Bible and even Plato mentioned that all Greek athletes at Olympia ate figs to increase their energy.

Fig tree can live up to 200 years and the ancient physicians used figs for treating syphilis, leprosy, sores, tumors, ulcers, malaria, and measles. Fig is a storehouse of nutrients because it contains organic acids, proteins, cellulose, and various vitamins (A, B1, B3, and C). It also contains magnesium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, and calcium which are useful for strengthening the immune system.

Not only fig fruits, the fig leaves are the source of polyphenols and flavonoids that function as bactericide and fungsida. These leaves are also often recommended for treating diabetes.

Here I will be releasing some health benefits of figs
Overcoming obesity

Figs have ficin, a digestive enzyme that is able to metabolize the protein into amino acids. This enzyme is also able to break down starch food into small molecules that contribute to the smooth running of the digestive system.

Preventing cancer

Figs contain phytochemical called benzaldehyde, and this substance is a cancer killer!

Slowing down aging

Since figs contain various antioxidant agents such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins, they are able to neutralize free radicals. Free radicals are the driving factor of aging.

Controlling blood pressure

Potassium contained in figs is able to prevent hypertension.

Increasing bone strength

Potassium and phosphorus contained in figs help in the regeneration of bone.

Preventing anemia

Figs contain iron which promotes the growth of red blood cells thereby preventing anemia.

Improving digestion

Figs are rich in soluble fiber. Soluble fiber can lower blood sugar levels and improve digestion.

You can get fresh figs from June to October and you should store them in the refrigerator. Wash before eating them. If you like this article you can distribute this to your family and friends.
