In the past two decade, natural medicine is becoming more and more popular. On several medical conferences in the past 10 years, oregano was presented as useful medicinal herb with various healing properties.
It is an interesting fact that its healing properties are not yet fully explored. Before we go into details let’s mention few things about oregano:
Oregano is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the labiates family (Lamiaceae). It grows naturally throughout the Mediterranean region and various sub types of this incredible plant can be found in Asia and America. This plant has a pleasant aroma and it has spicy and aromatic taste. Oregano contains less than 1% flavonoids, around 3% essential oil, tannin’s, free alcohols etc.
Oregano is a well known as an inevitable addition to many Italian food specialties. But in the past decade people have learned more about oregano as a healing food supplement.
So, what exactly are the benefits of using oregano?
1. Antiseptic properties
Oregano contains many different phenol’s. Thanks to these phenol’s and especially because the presence of thymol, oregano has strong antiseptic properties which means that oregano soothes inflammation in the gastro-intestinal system. It is also useful for gargling and rinsing in cases of inflammation of the mucous membranes.
2. It improves the immune system
Oregano can act as a strong antioxidant because of the substances found in it (like rosmarinic acid for example). Antioxidants help the body remove all the toxins which are accumulated in the body after some period of time of physical inactivity and practicing of unhealthy diet.
When it comes to fruit, vegetables and herbs oregano is in the upper part of food which has strong antioxidant properties.
3. Good for elimination of intestinal bacteria and parasites
Bacteria are naturally found in the intestines while parasites usually start to dwell there because of unhealthy lifestyle. If these bacteria start to procreate or the body doesn’t naturally remove the parasites the situation can become really complicated.

Although oregano cannot actually cure cancer if it is combined with few other things it can help the body feel better and in some cases overcome this disease.
Oregano contains large amounts of carnosol – a phytochemical known for its ability to improve the health of patients suffering from colon cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer etc.
