Against a bowl of M & M!

A bowl of M & M is very tasty, and most people like it, including me. When you’re watching television, M & M is a perfect companion. But after reading this article you might want to think again before eating “melt-in-your-mouth-not-in-hand you” chocolate.

History of M & M:

The brown grains were first made in 1941 and have now been circulated to more than 100 countries with 33 different types. In the beginning, M & M was created for the US Army, allowing them to carry chocolate anywhere without worrying it melting.

The two “M” are for William F.R. Murrie and Forrest E. Mars, Sr. William was the son of the president of Hershey chocolate allowing Mars to engage in the production of Hershey’s grain chocolate.

Hazardous ingredients

In 1976, red candy was questioned and then banned related to allegations that they contain carcinogens. 7 years later, the red candy was resold but consumers were still worried about the dangers of artificial colorings.

Consumers agreed that the used artificial colors were disguised “neurotoxic chemicals” and that suspicion was embodied by petition and a press release of the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI).

Even Kraft Macaroni and Cheese received similar demands, to negate Yellow # 5 and Yellow # 6, powered by no less than 350,000 signatures!

Basically, the CSPI required that each processed food manufacturer to use warning labels listing the risks of FD & C as a criterion in the selection of food colorings.

The composition of M & M

We can look at the composition of M & M from the package:

The milk chocolate is composed of sugar, salt, chocolate, skim milk, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, lactose, milk fat, and artificial colorings.

Corn syrup, artificial colorings (Blue 1 Lake, Red 40 Lake, Yellow 6, Yellow 5, Red 40, Blue 1, Blue 2 Lake, Yellow 6 Lake, Yellow 5 Lake, Blue 2), dextrin and gum acacia.

What dangerous:

Soy lecithin
This is dangerous because 93% of the soybeans in the market were the result of genetic engineering. Genetic engineering in agricultural products is seen to increase cases of breast cancer. Not only breast cancer, soy lecithin also lowers fertility and improves brain abnormalities.

Blue # 1
Supporting risk of malignant tumor and some of the symptoms of health problems such as asthma, allergies, low blood pressure, fever, and itching.

Red # 40
This can encourage swelling of the mouth, DNA damage (causing cancer), and even behavioral disorders in children (hyperactivity).

Yellow # 6
Associated with diarrhea, vomiting, rash, nettle, and hyperactive behavior.

Yellow # 5
Suspected capable of causing acute allergic reactions and even cancer.

Blue # 2
This is dangerous since it is a petroleum-based product. Most of the petroleum-based products have negative impacts, such as cell damage, brain tumors, and hyperactivity in children.

Gum Acacia
A fiber made of Acacia trees, suspected capable of causing indigestion. The FDA has recommended this ingredient as the safe ingredient but some studies prove otherwise.

In 2007, Forbes noted that M & M earned $ 27.4 million dollars and it was ironic due to the fact that they kill people slowly and earn money from it.

An alternative for you:

Dark Chocolate is a “clean” chocolate but you need to make sure that every dark chocolate that you eat is 100% organic.
