Carrot is known by the people as a fruit which helps eyesight but in reality, the banana is also effective for eye health. A recent study reported that in general, a variety of fruits can help the health of the eyes, and in addition to tomato, banana is the most prominent. This study was conducted over approximately 100 thousand men and women.
The study was devoted to know the influence of fruits to the age-related eye disease (ARMD) and what which leads to blindness (neovascular ARMD). Neovascular is the new blood vessels that grow around the eyes where they should not. The vessels will cause leakage of fluid in the retina that would evolve into the spots on central vision and blindness.
The results of the study were published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, which concluded that three or more servings of fruits each day can prevent some eye diseases and the study recommended bananas, no matter how it is consumed.
In Nigeria, banana is commonly used for traditional treatment for cataracts and macular degeneration. Banana-based concoction called “Orinol” has been proven very effective in curing impaired vision. We must realize that all banana kinds have a high content of vitamin A that plays a role in the protection of the eye membrane and the intake of light to the cornea.
Banana glycemic level varies depending on its maturity. Ripe bananas may have glycemic levels around 70 while not ripe bananas may have about 30. The fact is important to know because the high-glycemic foods have a significant relationship with an increased risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.
The US’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has conducted a study which forecast that 17.8 million people will suffer from ARMD in 2050.
Consumption of fruits like banana and lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking will reduce the risk of macular degeneration and cataract significantly.
